Beads have a rich history all across Africa and were formerly used as currency. They are integral to Ghanaian heritage and culture and considered items of decoration. They are being revived by young men and women who are experiencing a culture of ‘sankofa’ – a word in Twi that translates to ‘go back and get it’. The new generation are honouring age-old customs and reinterpreting these traditions into modern designs.
